Background

Millions of consumers and businesses located outside of metro areas find themselves “stranded” without robust and reliable broadband service. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce 80 Million Americans are un-served or under-served by broadband, i.e. have no or less than 2 Mbps of broadband service.

Consumer demand is large and growing evidenced by the rapid growth of services like Netflix, Vonage, IPTV, Khan Academy and other virtual educational and health care services, as well as by the well-publicized concerns of carriers whose forecasts show demand outstripping by a factor of 10 their ability to scale to meet it. This enormous demand demonstrates the need for viable, economically-sustainable, scalable alternative distribution and access.

System Requirements

Our customer is an experienced and innovative network inventor based in the USA. Their wireless mesh technology uses the licensed or unlicensed FCC spectrum (e.g. Wi-Fi 802.11ac) and can provide broadband connectivity to exurban and rural communities with speeds of 200 to 300 Mbps for both downloads and uploads.

Communities can link 30 to 500 households together in a 10-square mile service area, which has to keep signals strong and average Internet speeds of 150 Mbps,  on par with the best home internet speeds used in homes anywhere in the U.S. and well above the dial-up, DSL and satellite connections that exurban and rural communities presently endure. Each new household in a community adds to the strength of the network, that is the complete opposite of current network systems, in which adding new customers slow down entire neighborhoods.

VoxMicro Solution

VoxMicro performed all aspects of the solution development, from initial concept and design through to volume production leading our customers with our long-term experience in designing and manufacturing advanced high-quality electronic components quickly and cost-effectively.

Our high-end AIRETOS® IEEE 802.11ac/abgn PCI-E WLAN dual-band modules support the necessary wider channel bandwidth (80 MHz) at 5Ghz and wider 256-QAM, and provide all features that improve network bandwidth, reliability and the efficiency of wireless connections meeting the requirements of this advanced solution: advanced QFN, On-chip CPU for Host Wi-Fi offload, 80Mhz channel bandwidth, 4 Gbit/s bus bandwidth, evolved QAM baseband modulation technologies and 1.3 Gbps WLAN peak.
